Should you spend more on art prints or original paintings?

I recently found out that people shop more for art prints than an original painting. I can see why they would like it since you can buy to make your own prints, you can select the size, the dominant colors, the subject, the style, etc. With original art work, you have to look at lots of stuff to find something that fits you, your decor, the drapes, etc. What do you think? Which one is better an oringal painting that can be worth more later in the years or an art print that you can disign to your own pleasure?
